"And they left their gods there; and David gave commandment, and they were burned with fire." — 1 Chronicles 14:12 (ASV)

When they had left their gods there - The practice of carrying images of the gods into battle was common among the nations of antiquity, and it arose from the belief that the images themselves possessed power and that military success could be obtained through them.
