Albert Barnes Commentary
"And it came to pass, when David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of Jehovah [dwelleth] under curtains." — 1 Chronicles 17:1 (ASV)
Compare with 2 Samuel 7 and the notes found there.
"I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my lovingkindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee;" — 1 Chronicles 17:13 (ASV)
My son - The warning clause that occurs after this in Samuel is omitted here because the writer is not about to record the sins of Solomon or the sufferings (1 Kings 11:9–40) that he brought upon himself as a result.
"And this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; but thou hast spoken of thy servant`s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O Jehovah God." — 1 Chronicles 17:17 (ASV)
You have regarded me... - That is, "You have elevated me above other men by making my kingdom perpetual, regarding me as if I were a man of high degree." Compare this to the note on 2 Samuel 7:19.
"What can David [say] yet more unto thee concerning the honor which is done to thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant." — 1 Chronicles 17:18 (ASV)
For the honor of your servant - that is, “for the honor which You have done for Your servant.” The Septuagint omits “Your servant” and renders it: “What can David say more to You to glorify You? For You know,” etc.
"And let thy name be established and magnified for ever, saying, Jehovah of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and the house of David thy servant is established before thee." — 1 Chronicles 17:24 (ASV)
Some prefer, And let Your name be established and magnified forever; that is, "Let not only Your promise stand firm, but let Your Name also stand firm (continue to be held in honor) and be magnified."
