SCRIPTURE

"The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi; the sons of Jaaziah: Beno. The sons of Merari: of Jaaziah, Beno, and Shoham, and Zaccur, and Ibri." — 1 Chronicles 24:26-27 (ASV)

The sons of Jaaziah, Beno—“Beno” is not actually a name. It is the Hebrew for “his son” and should be attached to Jaaziah. Therefore, 1 Chronicles 24:27 should be translated as, “and the sons of Merari by Jaaziah his son were Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri.” The meaning of the entire passage (1 Chronicles 24:26–30) seems to be that there were three branches of the Merarites: the Beni-Mahli, the Beni-Mushi, and the Beni-Jaaziah.
