Albert Barnes Commentary
"that there should be no schism in the body; but [that] the members should have the same care one for another." — 1 Corinthians 12:25 (ASV)
That there should be no schism. The marginal reading is Division. (See Barnes on 1 Corinthians 11:18).
The meaning here is that the body should be united and form one harmonious whole. There should be no separate interests; all the parts should be equally necessary and truly dependent on each other. No member should be regarded as separated from the others or as unnecessary to the welfare of all.
The point illustrated by this is that no member of the church—however weak, uneducated, or obscure—should be despised or regarded as unnecessary or valueless. All are necessary in their places. It should not be supposed that they belong to different bodies or that they cannot associate together, any more than the less honorable and attractive parts of the body should be regarded as unworthy or unfit to be united with the parts that are considered more beautiful and honorable.
Should have the same care. This means they should care for the same thing and equally regard the interests of all, just as we feel an equal interest in all the members and parts of our own body and desire the preservation, healthy action, and harmonious and regular movement of the whole. Whatever part of the body is affected by disease or pain, we feel a deep interest in its preservation and cure. The idea is that no member of the church should be overlooked or despised; instead, the whole church should feel a deep interest in, and exercise constant solicitude over, all its members.
