SCRIPTURE

"And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again; for what have I done to thee?" — 1 Kings 19:20 (ASV)

Let me, I pray you, kiss my father ... - This was not an unnatural request to make before following his new spiritual father. Elijah, however, sees in this request a divided heart and will not grant permission or accept the service thus offered. Hence his cold reply. .

Go back again ... - That is, “Go, return to your plowing. Why should you quit it? Why take leave of your friends and come with me? What have I done to you to require such a sacrifice? For you evidently regard it as a sacrifice. Truly, I have done nothing to you. You can remain as you are.”
