SCRIPTURE

"Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him cheerfully. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past." — 1 Samuel 15:32 (ASV)

Delicately - The meaning of this word is very obscure. It is translated from a word that means “dainties” or “delights” (Genesis 49:20; Proverbs 29:17; Lamentations 4:5), a meaning which hardly makes sense in this context. Some understand it as “fawningly” or “flatteringly,” in order to appease Samuel. (Others alter the reading and translate it as “in bonds.”)

Surely the bitterness of death is past — Agag hopes that his life will be spared, and so expresses his confident belief that the bitterness of death is over.
