Verse 1

"Moreover he made an altar of brass, twenty cubits the length thereof, and twenty cubits the breadth thereof, and ten cubits the height thereof." — 2 Chronicles 4:1 (ASV)

The supplementary character of Chronicles is here once more apparent. The author of Kings had omitted to record the dimensions of the brass altar. It stood in the great court (2 Chronicles 6:12–13).

Verse 3

"And under it was the likeness of oxen, which did compass it round about, for ten cubits, compassing the sea round about. The oxen were in two rows, cast when it was cast." — 2 Chronicles 4:3 (ASV)

Instead of “oxen,” we find “knops” or “gourds” in 1 Kings 7:24. An early copyist, not comprehending the comparatively rare word used here for “gourd” and expecting to hear of oxen as soon as the molten sea was mentioned, changed the reading.

Verse 5

"And it was a handbreadth thick; and the brim thereof was wrought like the brim of a cup, like the flower of a lily: it received and held three thousand baths." — 2 Chronicles 4:5 (ASV)

Three thousand baths - See the note on 1 Kings 7:23. It is quite possible that the text in either this passage or in Kings has been accidentally corrupted.

Verse 7

"And he made the ten candlesticks of gold according to the ordinance concerning them; and he set them in the temple, five on the right hand, and five on the left." — 2 Chronicles 4:7 (ASV)

According to their form — Rather, this means “after their manner” (compare 2 Chronicles 4:20). There is no allusion to the shape of the candlesticks, which were made, no doubt, after the pattern of the original candlestick of Moses.

Verse 8

"He made also ten tables, and placed them in the temple, five on the right side, and five on the left. And he made a hundred basins of gold." — 2 Chronicles 4:8 (ASV)

The number of the tables (see 2 Chronicles 4:19) and of the basins is additional to the information contained in Kings.
