"And when he came to Samaria, he smote all that remained unto Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed him, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake to Elijah." — 2 Kings 10:17 (ASV)
(Compare to 2 Kings 10:11). Thus, the political revolution that transferred the throne from the house of Omri to that of Nimshi, the fifth of Israel’s royal families, was finally completed.
According to the saying of the Lord. This emphatic repetition (compare to 2 Kings 10:10) highlights two things. First, in the writer's view, this history derives its special interest from being a full and complete fulfillment of Elijah’s prophecies. Second, at the time, Jehu carefully put forward the plea that this was his objective.
This does not indicate, however, that a single-minded desire to execute God’s will was Jehu’s predominant motive. He was likely working for himself, not for God, even when he most strictly fulfilled the letter of the prophecies. For this reason, vengeance was declared against his house for the very blood of Jezreel (Hosea 1:4).
