SCRIPTURE

"Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face." — 2 Kings 14:8 (ASV)

Amaziah’s success against Edom had so elated him that he thought he was more than a match for his northern neighbor. The reason for the quarrel between them was the conduct of the Israelite soldiers who had been hired and then dismissed.

Let us look one another in the face—that is, “let us meet face to face in battle and test each other’s strength” (2 Kings 14:11–12).
