SCRIPTURE

"But if ye say unto me, We trust in Jehovah our God; is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?" — 2 Kings 18:22 (ASV)

To the Rab-shakeh, the destruction of numerous shrines and altars where Yahweh had been worshipped (2 Kings 18:4) seemed like an action designed not to secure the favor of that god, but to provoke his anger. In any case, it was an action that he knew had been displeasing to many of Hezekiah’s subjects.
