SCRIPTURE

"And he set the graven image of Asherah, that he had made, in the house of which Jehovah said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever;" — 2 Kings 21:7 (ASV)

A graven image of the grove - Rather, “the carved work of the Asherah.” This was the Asherah that Manasseh placed in the temple itself, from where it was later taken by Josiah to be destroyed (2 Kings 23:6). Such a profanation was beyond anything that had been done by either Athaliah (2 Kings 11:18) or Ahaz (2 Kings 16:14–18; 2 Chronicles 29:5–7).
