Albert Barnes Commentary
"Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched." — 2 Kings 22:17 (ASV)
Have burned incense — In the marginal reference, the corresponding phrase is have served other gods, and worshipped them. Its alteration to have burned incense points to the fact that the favorite existing idolatry was burning incense on the housetops to Baal (Jeremiah 19:13; Jeremiah 32:29) and to the host of heaven (2 Kings 21:3).
