SCRIPTURE

"and changed his prison garments. And [Jehoiachin] did eat bread before him continually all the days of his life:" — 2 Kings 25:29 (ASV)

Evil-merodach gave him garments befitting his rank. Providing clothing suitable for a person's position was a primary sign of favor from an ancient Near Eastern monarch (Genesis 41:42; Esther 8:15; Daniel 5:29; Luke 15:22).

Similarly, ancient Near Eastern kings considered it a mark of their greatness to feed a vast multitude of people daily at their courts (see 1 Kings 4:22–23). Of these, as was the case here, a select number had the special privilege of dining at the king's own table, while the others ate separately, often at a lower level (2 Samuel 9:13; 1 Kings 2:7; Psalms 41:9).
