"And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her eyes, and attired her head, and looked out at the window." — 2 Kings 9:30 (ASV)
Painted her face – This literally means she “put her eyes in antimony,” that is, she dyed her upper and lower eyelids with it, a common practice in the East even today. The effect is to both increase the apparent size of the eye and give it an unnatural brilliancy. Representations of eyes embellished in this way appear on Assyrian sculptures, and the practice also existed among the Jews (Jeremiah 4:30).
Tired her head – This means she dressed (or attired) her head. She also, no doubt, put on her royal robes so that she might die as was fitting for a queen, in full royal attire.
A window – The text should be read as “the window.” The gate-tower, like many of those seen in Assyrian sculptures, probably had only one window.
