SCRIPTURE

"And David said unto Michal, [It was] before Jehovah, who chose me above thy father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of Jehovah, over Israel: therefore will I play before Jehovah." — 2 Samuel 6:21 (ASV)

Play - See the note on 2 Samuel 6:5. The speech might be paraphrased: Before the Lord who chose me... yes, before the Lord I have danced. He humbles Michal’s pride by alluding to her father’s rejection, and he shows by Saul’s example how little pride contributes to the stability of greatness.

Therefore, for his part, he will not consider anything done for the glory of God to be beneath him; and if he cannot receive honor from Saul’s daughter, he will be content to be honored by the female servants.
