Albert Barnes Commentary Acts 12:18

"Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter." — Acts 12:18 (ASV)

No small stir. Amazement that he had escaped, and apprehension of the consequences. The punishment which they had reason to expect for having allowed his escape was death.

"Stir" means "disturbance."
