SCRIPTURE

"Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, saluteth you, always striving for you in his prayers, that ye may stand perfect and fully assured in all the will of God." — Colossians 4:12 (ASV)

Epaphras. (See Barnes' Notes on Colossians 1:7).

Always laboring fervently for you in prayers. The marginal note reads, "or, striving." The Greek word is agonizing. This word denotes the intense desire he had for their salvation, his fervent, earnest pleading for their welfare.

That you may stand perfect and complete. The marginal note, as in the Greek text, reads filled. The desire was that they might maintain their Christian principles unadulterated by philosophy and error, and completely perform the will of God in every respect. This is the expression of a pious wish regarding them, without any affirmation that anyone had been absolutely perfect, or that they would be perfect in this world. It is, however, a command of God that we should be perfect , and it is the highest wish of benevolence for anyone that they may be complete in moral character and may do all the will of God. (See Barnes' Notes on 2 Corinthians 13:9).
