Albert Barnes Commentary Exodus 18:20

"and thou shalt teach them the statutes and the laws, and shalt show them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do." — Exodus 18:20 (ASV)

Teach them - The Hebrew word is emphatic, and signifies “enlightenment.” The text gives four distinct points:

1. the “ordinances,” or specific enactments,
2. “the laws,” or general regulations,
3. “the way,” the general course of duty,
4. “the works,” each specific act.
