Albert Barnes Commentary
"The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews that dwelt in the land of Egypt, that dwelt at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Memphis, and in the country of Pathros, saying," — Jeremiah 44:1 (ASV)
Migdol - Magdolum, a strong fortress on the northern boundary of Egypt.
"because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, [and] to serve other gods, that they knew not, neither they, nor ye, nor your fathers." — Jeremiah 44:3 (ASV)
In that they went to burn incense, and to serve - Or, by going to burn incense to serve other gods by that means.
"Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate." — Jeremiah 44:4 (ASV)
Howbeit I sent - And I sent.
"Therefore now thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Wherefore commit ye [this] great evil against your own souls, to cut off from you man and woman, infant and suckling, out of the midst of Judah, to leave you none remaining;" — Jeremiah 44:7 (ASV)
Your souls - that is, your own selves.
"in that ye provoke me unto anger with the works of your hands, burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye are gone to sojourn; that ye may be cut off, and that ye may be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?" — Jeremiah 44:8 (ASV)
Cut yourselves off - Rather, cut (them, Jeremiah 44:7) off from you.
