Albert Barnes Commentary
"Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." — John 1:45 (ASV)
Moses, in the law - Moses, in that part of the Old Testament which he wrote, called by the Jews “the law.” See Deuteronomy 18:15, Deuteronomy 18:18; Genesis 49:10; Genesis 3:15.
And the prophets -Isaiah 53:1–12; Isaiah 9:6–7; Daniel 9:24–27; Jeremiah 23:5–6; and others.
Jesus of Nazareth ... - They spoke according to common understanding. They spoke of him as the son of Joseph because he was commonly supposed to be. They spoke of him as dwelling at Nazareth, though they might not have been ignorant that he was born at Bethlehem.
