SCRIPTURE

"And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this folly." — Judges 19:23 (ASV)

This man has come into my house - He appeals to the sacred rights of hospitality, just as Lot did (Genesis 19:8). Both cases painfully betray the low place in the social scale occupied by woman in the ancient world, from which it is one of the glories of Christianity to have raised her.
