Albert Barnes Commentary Luke 1:60

"And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John." — Luke 1:60 (ASV)

Shall be called John. This was the name which the angel had said should be given to him, of which Zacharias had probably informed Elisabeth by writing.
