Albert Barnes Commentary Mark 14:40

"And again he came, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they knew not what to answer him." — Mark 14:40 (ASV)

Neither wist they, etc. Neither knew they. They were so conscious of the impropriety of sleeping at that time, that they could not find any answer to give to the inquiry why they had done it.
