Mark 15

1798–1870
Presbyterian
Verse 16

"And the soldiers led him away within the court, which is the Praetorium; and they call together the whole band." — Mark 15:16 (ASV)

Called Praetorium. The hall of the praetor, or Roman governor, where he sat to administer justice.

Whole band. See Barnes "Matthew 27:27".

Verse 17

"And they clothe him with purple, and platting a crown of thorns, they put it on him;" — Mark 15:17 (ASV)

With purple. Matthew says scarlet. See Barnes, Matthew 27:28.

About his head. In the form of a garland, or diadem. The whole head was not covered, but it was placed in a circle round the temples.

Verse 18

"and they began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!" — Mark 15:18 (ASV)

No notes from Barnes on this verse.

Verse 19

"And they smote his head with a reed, and spat upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him." — Mark 15:19 (ASV)

Worshipped him. Mocked him with the appearance of homage. The word worship here denotes only the respect and honor done to princes and kings. It does not refer to any religious homage. They regarded him as foolishly and madly claiming to be a king—not as claiming to be Divine.

Verse 20

"And when they had mocked him, they took off from him the purple, and put on him his garments. And they lead him out to crucify him." — Mark 15:20 (ASV)
