Albert Barnes Commentary Matthew 22:42

"saying, What think ye of the Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, [The son] of David." — Matthew 22:42 (ASV)

What do you think of Christ? What are your views concerning THE MESSIAH, or the Christ, especially concerning his genealogy? He did not ask them their views concerning him in general, but only concerning his ancestry.

The article should have been retained in the translation—the Christ, or the Messiah. He did not ask them their opinion concerning himself, his person, and work, as our translation might suggest, but their views concerning the Messiah whom they expected.
