Albert Barnes Commentary
"And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazing-stock." — Nahum 3:6 (ASV)
And I will cast abominable filth upon you - Albertus says: "like a weight, so that what you would not regard as sin, you may feel in punishment." Abominable things had God seen (Jeremiah 13:27) in her deeds; with abominable things He would punish her. People would gladly sin and forget it as something past. God makes them possess the iniquities of their youth (Job 13:26), and binds these around them, so that they make them appear as they are, "vile" , These things you have done, and I kept silent; I will reprove you and set them in order before your eyes.
And will set you as a gazing-stock (Psalms 50:21), so that all, while they gaze at you, take warning from you (compare 2 Chronicles 7:20). I will cast you to the ground; before kings will I give you, for them to gaze upon you (Ezekiel 28:17). : “Whoever is not improved by the example of others, others will be improved by his example.”
