SCRIPTURE

"And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, O Jehovah, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee. And when it rested, he said, Return, O Jehovah, unto the ten thousands of the thousands of Israel." — Numbers 10:35-36 (ASV)

Each forward movement and each rest of the ark was made to bear a sacramental character. The one signified the going forth of God against His enemies; the other, His gathering of His own people to Himself: the one was the pledge of victory, the other the foretaste of rest.

Numbers 10:36 may be translated: “Restore” (that is, to the land in which their fathers dwelt temporarily), “O Lord, the ten thousands of the thousands of Israel.” (Compare Psalms 85:4, where the verb in the Hebrew is the same.)
