Albert Barnes Commentary Numbers 25:9

"And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand." — Numbers 25:9 (ASV)

Twenty and four thousand - Paul (1 Corinthians 10:8) says three and twenty thousand, following probably the Jewish tradition which deducted one thousand as the number slain by the hands of their brothers.
