"Now there came a famine over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance." — Acts 7:11 (ASV)
Found no sustenance (ουχ ηυρισκον χορτασματα). Imperfect active, kept on not finding.
Chortasmata is from
chortazo , originally to feed with grass (χορτος) or herbs. Old word, but only here in the N.T. and includes food for both men and animals. In Ge 24:25,32 it is fodder for the cattle, a first necessity for owners of herds of cattle.
