A.T. Robertson Commentary
"though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered;" — Hebrews 5:8 (ASV)
Though he was a Son (καιπερ ων υιος). Concessive participle with καιπερ, regular Greek idiom as in 7:5; 12:17.
Yet learned obedience (εμαθεν υπακοην). Second aorist active indicative of μανθανω. Succinct and crisp statement of the humanity of Jesus in full harmony with Lu 2:40,52 and with Heb 2:10.
By the things which he suffered (αφ' ων επαθεν). There is a play on the two verbs (εμαθεν--επαθεν), paronomasia. Second aorist active indicative of πασχω. He always did his Father's will (John 8:29), but he grew in experience as in wisdom and stature and in the power of sympathy with us.
