Charles Ellicott Commentary 1 Chronicles 11:17

"And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate!" — 1 Chronicles 11:17 (ASV)

That is at (in) the gate! —No such well is now known. The so-called “David’s well” is half a mile north-east of the town.
