"And David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore they called it the city of David." — 1 Chronicles 11:7 (ASV)

Castle.Stronghold, fastness. (Compare to 2 Samuel 5:7.) In 1 Chronicles 11:5 the form is m e çûdâh, here it is the rare masculine form, m e çâd: compare to Arabic maçâd, cacumen montis.

They called it. — Samuel (Hebrew), “one called it;” both in a general sense.

City. — Compare to Greek, polis = acropolis.
