Charles Ellicott Commentary
"O Jehovah, for thy servant`s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou wrought all this greatness, to make known all [these] great things." — 1 Chronicles 17:19 (ASV)
O Lord. — This phrase is not found in Samuel. It probably belongs to the end of the last verse.
For thy servant’s sake. — Compare Psalms 132:10; 2 Chronicles 6:42. Samuel has the more original phrase, for thy word’s sake. (Compare 1 Chronicles 17:23 and 1 Chronicles 16:15.)
Heart — i.e., purpose, intent.
In making known all these great things. (greatnesses).—The repetition “greatness ... greatnesses” is probably a scribe’s error.
Samuel has the right text: Thou hast done all this greatness (a work of power, δύναμις), namely, informing Your servant of what shall be hereafter.
Isaiah makes the miracle of prediction a special difference between the true God and idols (Isaiah 41:21–29; Isaiah 45:11; Isaiah 45:21).
