SCRIPTURE

"For thou, O my God, hast revealed to thy servant that thou wilt build him a house: therefore hath thy servant found [in his heart] to pray before thee." — 1 Chronicles 17:25 (ASV)

O my God. —Samuel: “Jehovah Sabaoth, God of Israel.”

You have told your servant that you will build him a house. —Literally, you have uncovered the ear of Your servant, to build him a house. Samuel has the more usual construction: “saying, A house I will build you.” (Compare to 1 Samuel 9:15).

Has found in his heart. —Rather, has found his heart—that is, has taken courage. The noun is expressed in Samuel. As to its omission here, compare 1 Chronicles 14:1. The phrase is unique in Hebrew.

To pray. —Samuel adds, “this prayer.”
