"and Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphelet, nine." — 1 Chronicles 3:8 (ASV)
Eliada. —(“God knows”) The Beeliada (“Lord knows”) of 1 Chronicles 14:7 is probably more ancient, though Samuel also has Eliada. God was long ago called Baal as well as El; and the former title was only discarded because it tended to foster confusion between the degrading system of worship of the Canaanite Baals and the true religion of Israel. So it happened in later times that people were unwilling to write or speak the very name of Baal, and in names formed with it, they substituted either El or Iah as in this case; or the word bosheth (shame), as in Ishbosheth instead of Eshbaal, Jerubbesheth instead of Jerubbaal.
