Charles Ellicott Commentary 1 Chronicles 6:38

"the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, the son of Israel." — 1 Chronicles 6:38 (ASV)

Son of Israel. —Asaph and Ethan are traced to Levi. It was not necessary to repeat “son of Israel” in each case. For further remarks on the names in 1 Chronicles 6:34–38, see above Notes on 22-28, the lines being identical. The numerous variants, however, seem to imply that the author drew from different documents.
