"and Ashan with its suburbs, and Beth-shemesh with its suburbs;" — 1 Chronicles 6:59 (ASV)

Ashan (smoke); in Joshua, Ain (fountain). The place may have had both names, from a fountain rising like a column of smoke. Juttah and her pastures has fallen out here (Joshua 21:16). At the end of the verse Joshua adds, Nine cities out of these two tribes, namely, Judah and Simeon.
