Charles Ellicott Commentary
"to another faith, in the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, in the one Spirit;" — 1 Corinthians 12:9 (ASV)
Faith.—This cannot mean the faith that is necessary for salvation, for that belongs to all Christians; rather, it means such faith as is mentioned in Matthew 17:20 and Luke 17:6, whose results are here enlarged to embrace not only miracles but also prophecy and the discerning of spirits. In the Greek, “the word of wisdom” is said to be given by the Spirit; “the word of knowledge” according to the Spirit; and “the faith and gift of healing” in the Spirit. By this variety of expression, the Apostle probably means to indicate the variety of the Spirit’s methods of operation, as well as the diversity of the gifts that He lavishes.
