Charles Ellicott Commentary
"And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Jehovah." — 1 Samuel 1:15 (ASV)
NO, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit ... —Calvin, quoted by Erdmann, well remarks here: “Consider the modesty of Hannah, who, though she had received injury from the high priest, yet answers with reverence and humility.”
On these words of Hannah the Talmud says: “Some think that Hannah spoke in the following sense: You are neither lord, nor does the Holy Spirit rest upon you, because you suspect me in this matter, and have formed such an uncharitable opinion of me. Neither the Shekinah nor the Holy Spirit are with you.” —Treatise Berachoth, fol. 31,Colossians 2:0.
