Charles Ellicott Commentary 1 Samuel 14:11

"And both of them disclosed themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves." — 1 Samuel 14:11 (ASV)

And the Philistines said ... — The sentinels of the outpost could easily have rolled stones down the steep cliff and hurled back the daring assailants; but they treated them with utter contempt, probably intending to take them alive if they ever succeeded in scaling the slippery cliff.
