SCRIPTURE

"Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father`s house, that there shall not be an old man in thy house." — 1 Samuel 2:31 (ASV)

I will cut off thine arm. —“The arm” signifies power and strength: “Your power and strength, and that of your house, are doomed.” (For this figure, see Job 22:9; Psalms 37:17.)

And there shall not be an old man in thine house. —No one else in your house, O High Priest, who have so signally failed in your solemn duty, will attain to old age; sickness or the sword will always consume its members prematurely. This strange denunciation of the “man of God” is emphasized by being repeated in 1 Samuel 2:32, and again in different words in 1 Samuel 2:33.
