Charles Ellicott Commentary
"To-morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the ascent of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel." — 2 Chronicles 20:16 (ASV)
Against them. —Or, to them.
They come up by the cliff of Ziz. — They are about to ascend by the ascent of Hazziz. Vulgate, “ascensuri enim sunt per clivum,” etc.
The brook. — The wadi, ravine, or watercourse.
The wilderness of Jeruel. —The name is unknown. However, comparing 2 Chronicles 20:2, 2 Chronicles 20:16, and 2 Chronicles 20:20, it appears that the great stretch of wasteland, now called el Husâsah (from a wadi on its north side), is intended. The “ascent of Hazziz” would be a pass or mountain path leading up from Engedi to this desert tableland. (Compare the name Hazziz with Hakkoz. Perhaps Husâsah preserves a trace of it. The Septuagint has Ασαεῖς; the Syriac and Arabic versions render it as “the ascent of dawn,” omitting “Jeruel.”)
