Charles Ellicott Commentary
"and they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It pertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto Jehovah, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honor from Jehovah God." — 2 Chronicles 26:18 (ASV)
They withstood. — ‘Amad ‘al, a late usage. (Compare to 1 Chronicles 21:1).
It belongs not to you, Uzziah, to burn incense. — Compare to the construction (1 Chronicles 15:2).
Trespassed. — That is, Done faithlessly (ma’al), as in 2 Chronicles 26:16.
Neither shall it be ... Lord God. —Literally, and not to you (is it) for honor from Jehovah; that is, your act will not result in honor, as you think, but in shame. Or, perhaps, burning incense does not belong to you as a prerogative from Jehovah (‘ên, not lô,’ would be more natural).
