Charles Ellicott Commentary
"In the second year of Joash son of Joahaz king of Israel began Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah to reign. He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother`s name was Jehoaddin of Jerusalem." — 2 Kings 14:1-2 (ASV)
THE REIGN OF AMAZIAH. (Compare to 2 Chronicles 25:0)
Jehoaddan. —The Hebrew text, which is supported by the Septuagint, has Jehoaddin (perhaps, “Jehovah is delight; ” compare to Isaiah 47:8, and the Divine name Naaman).
"And he did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, yet not like David his father: he did according to all that Joash his father had done." — 2 Kings 14:3 (ASV)
Yet not like David his father. —The chronicler paraphrases this reference to the ideal king of Israel: “ yet not with a perfect heart. ”
"Howbeit the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places." — 2 Kings 14:4 (ASV)
However. —The same word was rendered “yet” in the last verse. “Only,” or “save that” would be better.
"And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was established in his hand, that he slew his servants who had slain the king his father:" — 2 Kings 14:5 (ASV)
As soon as the kingdom was confirmed — that is, as soon as he was firmly established on the throne; as soon as he felt his power secure (Compare to 1 Kings 2:46).
Slew ...—slain. —Literally, smote ... smitten.
"but the children of the murderers he put not to death; according to that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, as Jehovah commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall die for his own sin." — 2 Kings 14:6 (ASV)
Even with the kings of Israel. — Probably some words have fallen out, and the original text was: “and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel” (Compare to 2 Kings 14:16). The Syriac and Arabic have, “and was buried.”
