Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Notwithstanding, they would not hear, but hardened their neck, like to the neck of their fathers, who believed not in Jehovah their God." — 2 Kings 17:14 (ASV)
Notwithstanding ... hear. —Rather, and they did not listen.
Necks. —Hebrew, neck. (Jeremiah 17:23; 2 Chronicles 36:13.)
Like to the neck. —LXX and Syriac, more than the neck. One letter different in the Hebrew.
Did not believe in the Lord their God. —The reference is not to intellectual but to moral unbelief, evincing itself as disobedience. Vulgate, “qui volerunt obedire.” They did not render the obedience of faith. (Compare to the use of ἀπειθεῖν in the Greek Testament.)
