SCRIPTURE

"Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy sons of the rest." — 2 Kings 4:7 (ASV)

Then she came. And she went in.

He said.LXX, “Elisha said.”

Thy debt. — This is correct; the margin note is incorrect.

And live thou and thy children. — In Hebrew, the text is, and you—your sons—you may live. Clearly, the word “and” has dropped out before the second word. Many manuscripts and all the versions include it.

Thou. — This refers to ’Attî, an archaism perhaps retained in the dialect of northern Israel (1 Kings 14:2).

Of the rest. — This means on what is left over—that is, of the price of the oil.

(Verses 8–37) The Shunammite woman and her son.
