SCRIPTURE

"And now, Israel, what doth Jehovah thy God require of thee, but to fear Jehovah thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve Jehovah thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul," — Deuteronomy 10:12 (ASV)

And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee? — “Although you have done all this, still His tender mercies and His affection are set upon you, and after all that you have sinned before Him, He does not ask anything of you but to fear,” etc. (Rashi). The Rabbis have drawn this exposition from this: “Everything is in the hand of Heaven (to bestow), save only the fear of Heaven.” But it is written elsewhere, I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. (Matthew 23:23).
