Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Beware lest thou forget Jehovah thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:" — Deuteronomy 8:11 (ASV)
Beware that. —Deuteronomy 8:11 to Deuteronomy 8:18 inclusive is one long sentence in the Hebrew, and can be understood as follows: “Watch yourself lest you forget Jehovah your God (so that you do not keep His commandments, etc.); lest you eat and are satisfied (while you build, etc.); and your heart is lifted up, and you forget Jehovah (your deliverer, your leader, your sustainer), and say in your heart, My power, etc. and (take heed) that you remember Jehovah your God, that it is He who gives you power to get wealth,” etc.
This caution is prophetic, as can be seen in the following examples:—
When Rehoboam had ... strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the Lord, and all Israel with him (2 Chronicles 12:1).
But when he (Uzziah) was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction (2 Chronicles 26:16).
Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up (2 Chronicles 32:25).
Other instances could easily be added.
