"I turned about, and my heart [was set] to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the reason [of things], and to know that wickedness is folly, and that foolishness is madness." — Ecclesiastes 7:25 (ASV)

The reason of things.— The corresponding verb “to count” is common. This noun is almost exclusive to this book, where it occurs again in Ecclesiastes 7:27, Ecclesiastes 7:29, and Ecclesiastes 9:10; except that in 2 Chronicles 26:15, we have the plural in the sense of military engines.
