"And she bare a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land." — Exodus 2:22 (ASV)

Gershom. —Almost certainly from ger, “a stranger,” and shâm, “there.” So Jerome, who translates it advena ibi. (Compare Josephus and the Septuagint, who write the name Gersam.)
